The End Of Racism In Sports Media And The Society

By Enid Hinton

We must have all had some interaction with the media. The media, that delivers information to us through a variety of ways. Racism is also a common term for it is almost everywhere even during this era of civilization. It is the discrimination of persons based on their racial back ground. Racism in sports media has been thriving over the years. Will it ever end?

Fairness is one thing that the networks and sports share in common. They journalist who love and understand the nature of their work will struggle to make sure they deliver truthful information. Ensuring that justice has been served. In games, the victory of a person is based on his talent. All the other factors should be numb to him. It is only fair when it is based on talent.

When chauvinism infests itself in both the press and games, it takes away the fairness that they both fight for. It denies very talented individuals opportunities of a life time. The discrimination causes them to shy away from sporting activities. It kills their will to do what they love. It destroys their driving force and decreases their productivity.

The same thing is seen in the games where racial comments are published by different networks revive ethnic thoughts. They not only influence the people reading or viewing their work, but also create favorable conditions for this parasite to thrive in. It then becomes a recurring problem, where one comment is shared across the globe via the internet like social networks.

We first need to emphasize on the brotherhood spirit. We are all one. Our similar features make us belong to one family. Our differences on the other hand just spice up life by adding variety. We may at times feel good about victimizing others. The truth is that we only prove to be worse than those we have discriminated. We victimize people who have no control over where they came from.

We need to see the similarities in each other. It is the similarities that draw us to each other. In so doing we can treat one another in a more respectful manner. A player from another ethnic group does not deserve different treatment. We become inconsiderate when we victimize people who have no control over their background.

It is only fair that media should protect the rights of the people. There should be no airing of racial comments, posts and written material. They are a mirror of our society. They should show us what is happening and helps us kill the evil in it. Therefore, they should be part of our solutions in the sports industry.

Strong policies and penalties should be set to curb the problem. Spectators should be warned against any kind of discrimination in relation to any participants. Otherwise, they should be punished for such crimes. Penalties should also apply to those who post, publish, or air racial comments. The networks should not be a platform for spreading evil. Penances should be applied to one who goes against these laws.

Therefore, the only way to kill the problem is by eliminating it from our minds. Killing from the source. With that, we will be able to look at the world with a different perspective. We should not use our minds as weapons but as tools that we can help others and ourselves in the process. Let us take a step as individuals and make the difference to the whole society.
