Gender Discrimination In Sports Media

By Enid Hinton

Unfair treatment of people based on their sex is what is commonly referred to as sex discrimination. This is as a result of traditional believes in relation to sex roles. The old conviction that the male is superior to the female. Women are often denied amateur and professional sport priorities and opportunities. Gender discrimination in sports media is a problem common to both sexes.

Sex in frequently mistaken for gender ethics. It is worth noting that sex refers to the physical body. It is either branded as man or woman depending on your features, but there are a special group of people who consider themselves as none of the above. Gender refers to socially accepted behavior that are linked to our bodies. They are the characteristics that the society defines as masculinity or feminity.

Young women drop out of sporting because of being viewed as non-feminine women. This goes as far as being labeled as lesbians regardless of their own sexual identity. In the same way a man who does not satisfy the social standard of a manly man feels intimidated and ends up excluding himself from games. These men will often be labeled as gay regardless of their sexuality. These judgments are made by people in society in relation to gender but they are clouded with opinions regarding sexuality.

In the sports industry the number of female journalist have been positively rising. Instead of this bringing a positive change to the world of sports, it has brought a lot of controversy. This is because the traditionalist believe it is the job of a man. All in all, these strong ladies have tolerated these thoughts.

These ladies are often given the grounds to feature short sessions before the games begin. Making a report on the ongoing game is a problem since the crowd behind constantly devote their time to make fun on them since they are ladies. Their careers and reputation are judged by how they look.

A long debate has been going on whether to permit or not lady reporters into the guys locker rooms. Of course most of the time they are denied access, making it advantageous for the male counterparts. Though in a case where both sexes are denied entry they blame rests on the female reporter.

Stereotyping is in all sorts of professions. It starts at a very youthful age where we associate certain occupations with a particular sex. For instance, women are not meant to take part in any games since they are seen as weak creatures. What our mind is fed to us does not grow as we continue growing into adulthood. That makes these labels wrong. They are rigid and do not allow room for change. It hurts people and we may also hurt ourselves in the process.

Breaking the stereotype barrier is not a walk in the park. Changing the thoughts and convictions of masses of people is harder than one can imagine. Our dear journalists should therefore focus their energy towards becoming better writers and reporters. In that way we will be satisfied knowing that sex cannot be a hindrance to work.
