By Roger Kennedy

Life doesn t always go the way we plan it to. Every now and then we will encounter hiccups and some will leave us miserable. During that period we will need support from people around to help us go back to our old selves so that we can move again. They might not understand the pain of what you are going through or what you are feeling but other people out there do. Isolating yourself from people will make you feel worse so you need to join a group therapy where you will communicate your feelings with people who are going through the same thing as you, and remember to yourself that rape doesnt define me.

It gives you the opportunity to understand yourself better from sharing your experiences with others. You will develop relationships with other group participants based on trust from sharing personal stories that will also raise awareness about certain issues and will help you make more informed decisions. More than anything group therapy offers support to help with the process of healing.

They say sharing is caring, the more you share you help shape other people s lives. In group therapy there s a lot of information which is shared in order to help one other. This process is beneficial because it offers emotionally and though talking. Being in the presence of other people who know exactly what you are going through shout at least give you a sense of belonging.

There are different kinds of group therapy and they are tailored to offer support for different needs. Some are skills development, cognitive behaviour, interpersonal process, psycho educational and support. Their separation only signify that support is offered for a variety of needs so whatever is that you are dealing with there is a group for you.

You should know that there are people within your community who are probably going through the same things as you. If it is depression, you don t have to tackle it alone or be ashamed of your status. Every participant is the group shares a common goal which is to feel better. Knowing that you are not alone should give you and consolation.

Group therapy can benefit almost everyone. Young and old people encounter different problems therefore are experiences are not the same.it does not have age restriction so if you feel like you need help you can join the group, it also gives you a chance to be socially active and ease the sense of isolation.

After attending many sessions you should start to feel better about yourself. You should be on your way back to your old self and because now you are more empowered you will be more cautious when it comes to decision making. Feeling better doesn t mean that you should stop attending the meetings, perhaps you should wait for your counsellor to give you the go ahead to avoid relapsing.

Your end goal should be to find ways of learning to cope with your own dilemma. Its understand that opening up to a group of strangers might not be the easiest thing to do but if it is going to help speed your progress then why not do it. Getting support is all that matters.
