Several decades of research have shown that omega 3 fats are very crucial to human health. In as much as one may need to cut down on their consumption of certain fats, omega-3 fatty acids should not be touched. These fats can be derived from both animals and plant sources. Several millions of Americans spend billions of dollars on these fats because they understand they know how important they are. This article gives a summary of omega 3 benefits.

There are two major kinds of these fatty acids that are crucial to the human body, that is, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. The abbreviations EPA and DHA are used for the two types of omega-3 respectively. These two kinds of omega-3 are predominantly derived from animals, especially krill and fish. Another type of omega-3 that is derived from plant tissues is called alpha-linoleic acid, usually abbreviated as ALA. ALA can be found in hemp, chia, and flaxseed.

ALA can be converted into DHA and EPA by the body. However, the process takes a long time and only occurs to a very low ratio regardless of the amount consumed. Most health benefits associated with omega-3s are as a result of animals-based DHA and EPA and not plant-based ALA. That makes it important to consume more animal-based omega-3s.

Statistics show that among the most important essential nutrients that the body needs, omega-3s are among them. Having these fats in low concentrations in the body increases chances of dying from any kind health problem. Consuming the fats in huge amounts is linked to many health benefits that short-term supplements cannot give.

Omega-3s have been found to be effective at combating depression and anxiety. Anxiety and depression are mental disorders that affect many people on a global scale. The two can have severe emotional and physical effects on patients if not handled in good time. Consumption of omega-3s reduces the likelihood of suffering from these disorders. People who are already suffering from these disorders have their symptoms improve by consuming these fats. EPA is the best omega-3 fat for fighting depression.

DHA omega-3 fat is one of the key components that make the brain and the retina of the eyes. People who do not consume of this fat usually start developing eye problems. Studies have linked consumption of DHA to a reduce risk of suffering from macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is among the top causes of blindness and permanent eye damage.

Communities that consume fish in large quantities suffer fewer deaths from stroke and heart attacks. This is because omega-3s are contained in large amount in fish. Omega-3 fatty acids are linked to many benefits for heart health. The benefits include reduction in blood clots, inflammation, plague, blood pressure, and triglycerides. The fats prevent blood platelets from clumping together and increase the amounts of HDL-cholesterol in body.

Studies have also indicated that omega-3s are very helpful for improving symptoms of ADHA in children. Children with lower blood levels of omega-3 tend to have ADHD. The fats can also help with autoimmune disease, asthma, bone and joint health, skin health, and menstrual pain.
